Your help at Hairgrove Elementary is making a difference. In partnership with Copperfield Church, we provide a meal and snack for the Title One Camps at Hairgrove. Participation by the students in these camps has increased significantly since we started helping. A while back, Marylin Phillips shared a wonderful story that shows how our efforts are making a difference. One of the teachers, who has been at Hairgrove for many years, told this story at a committee meeting Marylin attended in May ... Read More
Ministry in Latvia
Do you ever stop to wonder where the years have gone? I was thinking of this just the other day when I was looking back at all the ministry trips I’ve taken to the Eastern European country of Latvia since 1992. It seems like a long time ago that I made my first trip there but at the same time, it’s gone by like it was just yesterday. I thought I would journal some of the blessings this wonderful little country has given me and the opportunities I’ve had on some of our trips. Perhaps I can invite ... Read More
The Joys of Mentoring by Jane Winnie
I have had the awesome honor and privilege to be a mentor at Hairgrove Elementary School for three years. I started with a first grader and have continued spending 45 minutes with her each week during the school year. She is an excellent student, but very, very shy and quiet! The first year she barely talked to me and when she did say something, it was so quiet that I still could not carry on a meaningful conversation with her. She loves to play games and I was always learning to be creative in ... Read More
Marcella Rundio: Volunteer of the Year for 2014 at Mayde Creek HS By Cheryl Moses
As we prepare to honor those who serve throughout the year in different capacities with Hairgrove Elementary, we thought we'd highlight a special Calvary member who has faithfully served at another school in our area. Hairgrove is not the only place where you'll find our church members giving of their time and efforts on behalf of teachers, students, and school staff. We have many Calvary members who serve throughout our neighborhood school districts and who are making a difference in their ... Read More
A Mentoring Story By Jeff Chapman
I greatly enjoy getting out into the community and connecting and serving whenever I can. Mentoring at Hairgrove Elementary allows me to do both. This is my third year mentoring students. I always look forward to stepping onto the campus and seeing my nametag printing as I reach the front desk. It makes me feel like an honored guest. As I wait for my mentee in the cafeteria (the term “mentee” sounds so esoteric- I prefer to call him “My Little Buddy”), I love to look at the array of whimsical ... Read More
Memories from Myanmar
Editor’s note: Lynda Gilpin is writing to share a report from our trip to Myanmar from February – March 2014. We had a team of six people who made the trip: Jeff Chapman, Lynda Gilpin, Jeff McGee, Carol Monahan, Karen Tarpley, and Jane Winne. Thanks for your prayers and support for our trip and for our friends in Myanmar. Several have asked about our Mission to Myanmar. This may seem long, so I am putting it in sections to make it easier to read. There were many awesome experiences from ... Read More
Impact: Clothing Drive for Hairgrove
Thank you, Calvary and Copperfield Church, for your generous clothing donations. Once again, you've given over and above what we could have imagined. The tables were overflowing with clothing for the children of Hairgrove Elementary. We could not have done this without the help of many volunteers over the past month who sorted, transported and organized the clothing throughout this entire process. We want to shout out a huge thanks, also, to Patti Ressler for heading up this project. Click ... Read More

Testimony of a Mentor By Margaret Petry
Seven years ago I became a mentor. I started visiting a fourth grade girl at Homesley Elementary and every week we spent 30 minutes together. We talked of school, friends, books, interests, and whatever else she brought up. When the fourth grade year ended, the girl asked me to come back the next year. However, when fifth grade began and I returned, things progressed differently. Several times, special school activities were going on simultaneously with our meeting time, and I could tell she ...
